Plan for Managing Your Ever-Growing Data
– Daniel Linstedt, Core Integration Partners
(i) What Is VLDB?
Very Large Databases
by Dan Linstedt
This is the first part of a three part series on Very Large
Databases. The paper is divided into six chapters and two chapters will be
included with each part.

T8: OMG’s Model Driven
Architecture
– Jon Siegel, Object Management Group
The web site has dozens of
articles and references on its Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and other OMG
standards. The MDA “home page”
is at http://www.omg.org/mda/ and serves
as a good starting point for novices, including an Executive Overview and FAQ
section. Additional advanced papers
are also available from this page.
T9: Agile Modeling to
Agile Data
– Scott Ambler
The Agile Modeling home page is http://www.agilemodeling.com. You can obtain a general intro to the topic on this page, and also link to a truly comprehensive set of in-depth articles, essays and other resources. There’s even Chinese and Japanese translations of some material!
Data Vault Overview: The Next Evolution In Data
Modeling
– Dan
Linstedt
This paper provides a
detailed discussion of a new (and patent-pending) physical modeling technique
called the Data Vault™. This is a
highly technical paper and the author recommends it for an audience of data
modelers, data architects and database administrators (not for business
analysts, project managers, or mainframe programmers). He also recommends a
pre-requisite knowledge of data modeling terms such as table, relationship,
parent, child, key (primary/foreign), dimension and fact.

Database Refactoring
– Scott Ambler
Scott has posted the
following articles on his Agile Data web site as an introduction to database
refactoring. He invites comments to both articles.
(i) The Process of Database
Refactoring (http://www.agiledata.org/essays/databaseRefactoring.html)
which describes how to go about evolving your database schema in an iterative
and incremental manner. Database Refactoring (in the author’s opinion)
is an enabling technique for data professionals to work effectively with
application developers who are taking an agile approach to software development
(such as XP, Scrum, DSDM).
(ii) Catalog of Database
Refactorings (http://www.agiledata.org/essays/databaseRefactoringCatalog.html).
This is a table summarizing database refactorings.
Information Quality

–
Joshua Fox
Central
Information Models for Data Transformation
by Joshua Fox, Unicorn Solutions
This article is scheduled to appear in EAI Journal soon. It explains a new approach to data transformation based on the notion of a central information model--a kind of "semantic hub" -- to provide data semantics and eliminate classic EAI point-to-point analysis and mapping.
Analytical API Update
– Seth Grimes
XML for
Analysis Decoded
by Seth Grimes
XML for Analysis is
supposed to provide a single API for querying multiple data sources, but how
successful is it in accomplishing this objective?
This short article discusses XML for Analysis,
it’s “competitors”, and where the analytical API market is heading.

"IT" Get This Way? A
"Self-Help" Test
by Robert Seiner, KIK Consulting
A DM Review article by
speaker Bob Seiner, which offers some of the questions that you can ask yourself
about your company to give you a clearer understanding of why you are having
problems managing information assets. Bob
writes it as a light-hearted piece, and doesn’t but we all recognize the truth
that lies within.

XML Tools: Xquery
– Denise Draper, Nimble
Technology
XML has received a lot of
momentum as a language for data interchange and integration, and support for
XQuery has already been announced by several large vendors.
XQuery will soon be one of the standard tools available for application
development and integration. Denise
suggest the following as good references on XQuery.

of the language, still in draft form)
(ii) XQuery use cases

Considerations for
Building a Real-time Data Warehouse
by DataMirror Corporation
This White Paper does a good job at outlining the business and system considerations for real-time data warehousing. It's mostly an "easy read", and though it comes from a vendor, it manages to avoid obvious bias (at least for the most part!).
Zero Latency Data
Infrastructures
by Dorinne Hoss
This article, published on

associated with creating a real-time data infrastructure.
